Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 19, 2005 Since you asked Motel lodging wouldn’t include supervision Several weeks ago, after the terrible tragedy on the bike path, an associated article stated that a lack of shelter and beds caused the young girl to be turned away from safe lodging. The article then stated that a shelter and bed was found and contracted for at $79 per night. This seemed reasonable at first. But most of the motels in the area offered rooms for $49 per night. (I am sure even less if the agencies were to contract with them). Doesn’t this seem like a better investment and use of taxpayers’ money? — Dennis B., Medford At first glance, your suggestion seems like a good idea, Dennis. But there are a few drawbacks to the notion of lodging homeless and runaway teens in inexpensive local motels, according to Arnie Green, director of the Community Works. "The whole point of shelter is not just to shelter, it is to begin the whole process of getting kids help," said Green, who noted that his agency works to reunite families or to get young people into safe, long-term living arrangements. In addition, the agency is required to provide supervision that is not available at area motels, he said. That’s why Community Works has an agreement to provide emergency shelter for young clients at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center. The $79 per night cost includes supervision. When Dunn House, the Community Works shelter for battered women and children, is full, adult clients are sent to area hotels, Green said.
