For more than six years, more than 150 members of the Car Nuts Car Club have come together at Christmas to collect and distribute toys for poor kids in west Medford. Every year, on a Saturday in early December, the members have washed and shined their cars, filled them with toys and headed out to the Big R in White City. "A lot of times, even when it snows, we’re out there," said Burl Fennell, past president of the car club and spokesman for the event. Despite their enthusiasm, the group hasn’t received a lot of recognition. Advertisement This year, Fennell wants to make sure folks know about their project. It’s scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. Saturday at the Big R, 7303 Highway 62. Participants can expect to see dozens of classic and vintage cars in prime condition. "We don’t have any limitations. We have car clubs from all over the valley that come out. We have the Mustang clubs, the British car clubs, you name it," he said. This year, Dave’s Dog House will be supplying free hot dogs and chili. Folks who stop by are invited to bring unwrapped new or high-quality used toys for donation. The toys will go, as always, to the Interfaith Care Community, where director Sharon Schreiber says the efforts have brightened the holidays for thousands of kids. "They just outdo themselves," Schreiber said. "Last year, poor Santa was stuffed against the wall." This year, parents who sign up for services from the agency have been promised at least one toy for each of their children. Donations from the Car Nuts project have been particularly welcome, she said. "They give us wonderful toys, beautiful toys that most of our families would never be able to buy their kids," Schreiber said. In addition to the toys, the car club raised about $1,500 to distribute to schools and families this year, Fennell said. About $300 will go to Jackson, Washington and Oak Grove elementary schools. Another $300 will go to help a struggling mom in Medford provide Christmas for her three kids. More presents have been provided for the Jackson County Foster Parent Association.
