A heat advisory has been issued that will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, with temperatures above 100 degrees anticipated for Southern Oregon and Northern California through the weekend, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Charles Smith. In Medford, Friday's forecast of 107 degrees would tie a record set in 1967. The average high for Aug. 19 is closer to 90 degrees, Smith said. "We have high confidence we're going to break 100," Smith said. Heat advisories are issued at the weather service's discretion, and the upcoming advisory was put out because of concerns regarding continuously high temperatures that are expected to drop only to the mid-60s to low-70s at night, which can be bad for sensitive groups such as the elderly, the very young and people who are ill. "It's warmer than average for lows," Smith said. Ashland is expected to be marginally cooler than Medford during the latest heat wave but still above triple-digits before dropping to 98 degrees Sunday. Smith said the hot weather is the result of a high-pressure system that is drawing down to the surface warm air from higher in the atmosphere. "It's not like the sun is heating us up more," Smith said. Temperatures will be high as far north as Roseburg and into Northern California, Smith said. For those seeking respite from the heat, Smith said a good option is Crater Lake. "Crater Lake will be a comfy 75 degrees," Smith said.
