Gym Rats rally to win big tourney VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Southern Oregon Gym Rats, a sixth grade AAU select boys basketball team, won its third tournament of the year and raised its record to 20-1 with a stirring comeback Sunday. Southern Oregon scored the last 10 points of the championship game to defeat the Tacoma, Wash., Icemen, 59-57, in the Northwest Big 12 Invitational Tournament. The tournament attracts the top 12 teams from Oregon and Washington. The Gym Rats trailed 57-49 with two minutes left before their big run. Skyler Talbott of Ashland made a layup with 12 seconds remaining to give Southern Oregon its first lead at 58-57. Derek Steadmon of Talent scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to spark the Gym Rats. Talbott scored 11 and Josh Cornelius of Ashland added 10. Earlier Sunday, Southern Oregon defeated Seattle Style, 51-47. Talbott had 14 points and 10 assists, Cornelius scored 12 and Kyle Singler of Medford 10. Other members of the Gym Rats are Sam Littleton and Colin Reinstedt of Ashland and, from Medford, Adam and Eric Stroh and Steven Theel. The Gym Rats will compete in the Oregon state AAU tournament March 31-April 2 at Thurston High in Springfield.
