Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 30, 2006 Pirates record big sweep of Knights, gain tiebreaker advantage Prep Softball TALENT — Phoenix began the second half of Skyline Conference softball with a crucial sweep of North Valley Saturday. The Pirates won 5-4 and 12-2 in five innings, giving them the tiebreaker edge over the Knights should that come into play as the season winds down. Each team plays the others three times in league, and North Valley already owned a victory over Phoenix. "Basically, it puts us back in the playoff picture with Rogue River and North Valley," said Pirates coach Brent Watts. We’re battling for the second and third spots. All of us are going to be close." Mazama has a stranglehold on first place at 12-1. Then it’s North Valley (8-5), Rogue River (7-4) and Phoenix (6-5). Phoenix (11-8 overall) is at Rogue River for a single game Tuesday. The teams split an earlier doubleheader, so the winner of the upcoming game will have the tiebreaker edge there. Advertisement Against North Valley, Phoenix’s Taylor Barrett went the distance with four- and five-hitters, respectively, and the Pirate bats did just enough damage in the opener. The key hits in the first game came in the sixth inning. Jordan Ceremony tripled with one out, then Rebecca Singleton doubled her in with the eventual game-winner. North Valley scored twice in top of the seventh to close within one and make it interesting. Barrett struck out 11 and walked two. "She threw really well," said Watts. "She kept us close, then we kept adding to our lead. We needed every run there." In Game 2 for the Pirates, Singleton had three hits and Barrett two, while Emily Lubonski drove in three runs and Tawnya Tidwell and Tera Fry each had two RBIs. MAZAMA 1-13, HENLEY 0-3 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama’s Danielle Stratton had four hits over both games and drove home the game-winning run in opener of the Skyline Conference sweep. Ali Edwards gave up two hits in eight innings in Game 1 to improve to 12-0. Becky Borror had two hits, and she belted a three-run double to spark a seven-run third inning in Game 2. Ashlie McDaniel led the seventh-ranked Vikings (16-2, 12-1 Skyline) with three hits, and Chelsea Whiteley and Ann Bocchi had two hits apiece. Henley fell to 5-7 in conference. MARYS 12-8, BUTTE FALLS/PROSPECT 2-4 — St. Mary’s pitcher Brianna Williams had a total of 15 strikeouts and two walks to help St. Mary’s sweep the doubleheader against Butte Falls/Prospect. In the first game, Williams went 2-for-3, including a double, and had two RBIs while teammate Liz Montan went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. In the second game, the Crusaders were down by two in the fifth inning with two outs and the bases loaded when Sara Godshall hit a single that drove in two runs to tie the game. Amanda Buckmister also helped out St. Mary’s (5-7, 3-6 SCL), going 2-for-4 and driving in two runs. For Butte Falls, Brianna Wright hit a double.
