BOYS GOLF: Cavemen claim SWC match By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Apr 05, 2022 04:00 PM A A GRANTS PASS — The one-two punch of Messiah Gilbert and Oliver Ausland showed up in a big way for the Grants Pass boys golf team on its home course Monday. Gilbert earned medalist honors with an even-par 72 and Ausland was runner-up with a 73 to lead the Cavemen to victory at the Southwest Conference tournament at Grants Pass Country Club. The Cavemen scored 303 as a team while South Medford came in third place with a 345, using Blake Boutwell’s 81 — the fifth-lowest score of the SWC field — as well as Kyle Reed’s 87. Competing in a separate small school division that included North Valley and Bandon, St. Mary’s junior Brock Drury posted the true top mark of the day with a 1-under 71 to help the Crusaders finish with a team score of 330 that equaled the second-best mark of the day behind Grants Pass. North Medford’s Trey Neff shot an 89 as the Black Tornado took fourth with a 377. Tiger Kao (82), Davis Jones (87) and Elliot Zimmer (90) also fared well for St. Mary’s.
