The mail was allegedly stolen by the adult boyfriend of the woman's 17-year-old daughter, according to a probable cause affidavit by Medford police. Daniel Richard Slocum, 20, of the 2100 block of East Barnett Road in Medford has been charged with three felony counts of mail theft. He entered not guilty pleas to the charges Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court. On Dec. 4, a woman reported finding a large amount of stolen mail in her daughter's bedroom, along with marijuana and alcohol, according to the affidavit. The mail was inside a backpack that allegedly belonged to Slocum, the daughter's boyfriend. The daughter told police Slocum said he found the mail, the affidavit said. A detective with the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team located Slocum Dec. 5 and took him into custody on a probation violation detainer, the affidavit said. Slocum allegedly admitted to investigators that he got the mail from several houses on Bursell Road in Central Point. He later changed his statement and denied taking the mail, the affidavit said. Investigators recovered numerous pieces of mail belonging to three addresses on Bursell Road, including bills, a vehicle registration document and other personal mail, the affidavit said. Investigators could not identify the owners of a large amount of the mail because the mail was torn open and the addresses were missing, the affidavit said. Slocum was released from the Jackson County Jail on his own recognizance Dec. 8, according to court records. But he was jailed again Dec. 23 after being arrested on a charge of methamphetamine possession. Medford police allegedly found meth and marijuana in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to court records. Slocum remained in jail as of press time on the meth charge and for allegedly violating the terms of his probation, jail records show. Slocum pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery in February. A charge of third-degree assault was dismissed.
