Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 23, 2005 Thorpe comes up big in Challengers’ sweep Prep Roundup Erika Thorpe turned in her best performance of the season during an important Southern Cascade League volleyball matchup Saturday at The Pavilion. Thorpe helped Cascade Christian mow down the Bonanza without losing a game in either match to take over sole possession of second place in the SCL. In the opener, Cascade Christian cruised to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-12 win, then completed the sweep with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-13 victory. The teams were tied with 7-2 league records entering the fray, but now the Challengers (9-2) hold a two-game lead over Bonanza and St. Mary’s. Thorpe, a senior setter/outside hitter, provided the Challengers 10 kills, 16 assists, three aces and nine digs. In 32 hitting attempts, she only made two errors. "(Thorpe) had an awesome night," Cascade Christian coach Susan Gmur said. "She did everything right, including a positive hitting percentage." Cascade Christian used excellent serving to keep Bonanza off balance. The Challengers combined for 25 aces in both matches and had a serving percentage near the 90 percent mark. Advertisement "We served them tough so it kept them from mounting any type of attack," said Gmur. Junior defensive specialist Stephanie Rotarius paced the Challengers from the service line with eight aces. Junior Melissa Gmur pounded seven aces to go with 14 kills, 14 assists and four blocks. Libero Kelsey Ost contributed 21 digs and was 28 of 30 passing. ST. MARY’S WINS TWIN BILL — St. Mary’s played its best all-around volleyball of the season against Lost River, extended its winning streak to four and gave coach James Joy his 200th career win. St. Mary’s (15-10, 7-4 SCL) had to fight off two game points in the first game of the opening match then used that momentum to post a 27-25, 25-13, 25-16 win. In the second match, the Crusaders coasted to a 25-18, 25-11, 25-19 home victory. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Reedy sparked the Crusaders with 39 kills and 43 digs, while senior libero Tia Khachitphet also came up with 43 digs. Sophomore setter Cynthia Naumes kept the St. Mary’s offense performing efficiently with 66 assists on the day. Naumes was 43 for 43 serving with five aces. Skyline A Volleyball BUTTE FALLS 3, GILCHRIST 0 — At Butte Falls, sophomore defensive specialist Karlee Stephenson splashed down seven aces while going 17- for-18 from the service line to help Butte Falls sweep 25-21, 25-17 and 25-21. Loggers’ senior outside hitter Ceci Myers collected 10 digs and senior Nikki Harms sprawlled out for seven digs in the Butte Falls senior’s last home game. Junior Kyndi Sutfin added seven kills for the Loggers (8-1 Skyline A). Girls Water Polo MEDFORD LOSES THREE — At Cottage Grove, Elyse Cogburn scored four goals in three games but Medford failed to reach the win column, losing to South Eugene (11-4), Marist (13-4) and Cottage Grove (14-2). Goalie Jenni Osmanski registered 18 blocks against Cottage Grove and 17 against South Eugene. Medford’s season record dropped to 0-8. Boys Water Polo MEDFORD WINS TWICE — At Cottage Grove, Josh Silver scored seven goals as Medford took two of three water polo matches. Medford beat South Eugene 10-8 and Marist 19-8 before losing to Cottage Grove 12-4. In the win over Marist, Silver and Zach Haveman each scored four goals and Lance Abbott had three. Jason Flinn helped out in goal with eight blocks. Against South Eugene, Silver, Jon Lawson and Jordan Rigby tallied two goals apiece, and Flinn again had eight blocks. Medford ran its season record to 4-8. Cross country MT. SAC INVITATIONAL — At Walnut, Calif., Crater High standout Isaac Stoutenburgh finished second in his race and fifth overall at what is billed as the largest high school cross country meet in the world. Some 16,000 runners toed the starting line in races that went off every eight minutes from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Stoutenburgh, participating in the boys individual sweepstakes race, covered the hilly three-mile course in 14 minutes and 47 seconds. He took second to Ben Stitler of St. Francis High in Simi Valley, Calif. In the team sweepstakes race, Diego Mercado set a course record of 14:24.
