How much is collected every year through that brown grocery bag food drive that’s in the paper around Thanksgiving? — Jeff S., Eagle Point Thanks for asking, Jeff. Your question reminds us to offer readers an update on the annual ACCESS Inc. "Food for Hope" drive that started Nov. 29. So far, ACCESS has received between 16,000 and 17,000 pounds of food and about $12,000 through the drive that runs until today, said Philip Yates, nutrition services manager. That’s less than the 25,000 pounds of food and $25,000 organizers hope to collect this year, he noted. Advertisement Last year’s "Food for Hope" drive raised about 20,000 pounds of food and about $17,500. The premise is this: Mail Tribune readers are asked to fill the grocery bags with nonperishable foods and drop them off at any local fire station or other locations, including the ACCESS offices at 3630 Aviation Way, Medford. Foods rich in protein are preferred. That includes peanut butter, canned tuna, canned meat and beans. Donations of other nonperishables such as rice, pasta and hot and cold cereals are welcome, too.
