Slow-starting Grizzlies beat North Bend, 2-0 ASHLAND -- The excitement of being in the state playoffs left the Ashland High boys soccer team a bit starry-eyed Saturday. But once the Grizzlies settled down they dominated North Bend on the way to a 2-0 victory at Ashland Middle School. Eric Sharp scored the first goal on a rebound shot in the 23rd minute and Scott Beaver connected in the 72nd minute as the Southern Oregon Conference champion Grizzlies improved their record to 11-0-4 and advanced to the second round. The match was played under extremely windy conditions. "We didn't play our game in the first half," Ashland coach Eisa Tiaa Toutou said. "The excitement of being in the playoffs was a distraction. "We finally settled down in the last half of the second half. All of our passes started going through and we played the way we should." Ashland had a big edge in shots, 29-7, and corner kicks, 10-4, but couldn't establish any breathing room until it scored its second goal with just eight minutes to play in the match. The goal came on a counter attack when Sharp took the ball at midfield, dribbled down the right side and passed through two defenders to Beaver, who got by another Bulldog defender and put the ball in the right corner of the net. "I had a guy on my shoulder," Beaver said. "I got by him and was able to push it right into the goal." BARLOW 2, KLAMATH UNION 1 -- At Gresham, Phil VanBuren scored the lone Klamath Union goal as Barlow ended the Pelicans' season. VanBuren's goal came late in the first half. It was one of few scoring threats for Klamath Union as Barlow outshot the Pelicans 16-10. WILSON 3, ROSEBURG 2 --At Portland, Roseburg threw a scare into the Portland Interscholastic League champion Trojans but failed to pull out the win. Ryan Holt's goal in the 40th minute tied the match 2-2 and it stayed that way until the 70th minute when Wilson pushed through the winning goal. Brody Shelby scored Roseburg's first goal at the 30th minute. The Indians finished the season with an 11-5 record. ST. MARY'S 1, SOUTH UMPQUA 0 -- At Tri City, Brian Staver provided the offense for St. Mary's in its Class 3A-2A-1A state playoff win.
