By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Dec. 16, 2010 @ 12:01 am Updated Dec 16, 2010 at 2:40 AM By The Associated Press Posted Dec. 16, 2010 @ 12:01 am Updated Dec 16, 2010 at 2:40 AM » Social News EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Eli Manning is not going to have go-to Pro Bowl receiver Steve Smith for rest of the season, and maybe longer. Smith injured the articular cartilage in his left knee in the win over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday and will need season-ending knee surgery. An orthopedic surgeon told The Associated Press the surgery requires a very long rehabilitation process, but it is possible Smith might be ready for training camp. Smith, who set a team record with 107 catches last season, was hurt on the opening play of the fourth quarter when he was tackled from behind on a 12-yard reception, his 48th of the season. The game was his first since partially tearing a pectoral muscle in practice on Nov. 11. "I feel bad for Steve," coach Tom Coughlin said. "He fights his way back, he gets back on the field, he gets a little bit acclimated to game conditions again, and then is injured." Smith is the fifth Giants' receiver to be knocked out since minicamp, and the third since the season started, joining Ramses Barden and Victor Cruz. The bottom line is the Giants (9-4) will now face the Philadelphia Eagles (9-4) on Sunday in the showdown for first place in the NFC East with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham being Manning's prime targets, and Derek Hagan, Michael Clayton and Devin Thomas filling in when the team uses three- or four-receiver packages. Nicks returned to the lineup on Monday after missing three games with a lower leg injury and said he was sore on Wednesday. Manningham had to leave the game with a hip injury. Texans Mario Williams, the Houston defensive end who went to the last two Pro Bowls, is out for the rest of the season. The Texans said Wednesday that Williams had been placed on season-ending injured reserve. He's struggled with injuries since September, and a groin injury was listed as the reason. The team also placed wide receiver David Anderson (shoulder) and guard Mike Brisiel (calf) on injured reserve. The Texans (5-8) play at Tennessee (5-8) on Sunday. If AFC South rival Jacksonville wins just one of its last three games, Houston will be eliminated from postseason contention for the ninth straight year. Jets Sal Alosi tripped up when he told the New York Jets his side of the story. Now, the embattled assistant coach could be looking to save his job. Alosi, New York's strength and conditioning coach, was suspended indefinitely by the team Wednesday after he acknowledged that he told five inactive players to stand next to each other for a punt return, during which he tripped a Miami Dolphins player. "As we continued our investigation, we discovered some new information," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a conference call from the NFL owners meetings in Dallas, "and the players at the Miami game were instructed by Sal to stand where they were to force the gunner in the game to run around them." That was information Alosi did not initially volunteer Monday, according to Tannenbaum. The team suspended Alosi for the season without pay and fined him an additional $25,000 after he stuck out a knee and tripped Miami's Nolan Carroll, who was covering the punt in the third quarter of the Dolphins' 10-6 win Sunday. Vikings NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is close to announcing whether the league will punish Brett Favre for sending inappropriate photos and phone messages to a former New York Jets game hostess. Goodell said Wednesday he received the league's report about the case "last week and I expect that some time in the near future I will make a decision." Asked if that would come by the end of the season, he said, "I expect that, yes." The NFL is examining whether Favre sent Jenn Sterger messages and photos in 2008, while he was playing for the Jets and she also worked for the team. Now with Minnesota, Favre, whose record consecutive starts streak ended at 297 on Monday night because of a shoulder injury, could face disciplinary action under the league's personal conduct policy. Sterger's manager, Phil Reese, said Sterger wants the league to discipline Favre before his career ends. "It's not a money story," Reese said, adding his client's goal is some acknowledgment that Favre was in the wrong. Favre has said this season will be his last.
