Truck fire snarls traffic on Interstate 5 near Phoenix Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 31, 2016 at 5:25 PM Posted Jan. 31, 2016 at 5:25 PM » Social News PHOENIX — A south-bound flatbed truck carrying a Maersk cargo contained caught fire near Exit 24 around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, slowing traffic along Interstate 5 and blocking the outside lane for most of the afternoon. A Jackson County Fire District 5 engine was dispatched to the scene moments before a Medford Fire & Rescue unit was also sent to the scene. The truck was on the side of the road just north of Exit 24, requiring the District 5 engine crew to drive to the South Medford interchange and return to the freeway. The tractor cab was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, Engineer Bill Boylan said. He said the driver had first attempted to put out the flames with an extinguisher. Maersk is a global shipper, but it the truck's point of origin and its destination weren't immediately known. A Medford engine and crew arrived shortly after the first engine. Oregon State Police also responded. Between 100 and 200 gallons of fuel were removed, Boylan said. But only 30 reached the ground, and none escaped the roadside. Firefighters were unsure of what ignited the fire, but thought it most likely was transmission related. There were no injuries reported.
