New smoke detector saves occupants from fire Tuesday Jan 24, 2017 at 11:09 AM Jan 24, 2017 at 4:39 PM Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune @RyanPfeil A fire early this morning caused severe damage to a manufactured home at Royal Oaks Mobile Manor, 4069 S. Pacific Highway, No. 104, outside Phoenix, but fire officials say the occupants made it out unharmed because of a new smoke detector. The residents were sleeping when a smoke alarm in the house went off, according to a Medford Fire-Rescue news release. They evacuated the building safely as it continued to fill with smoke. The smoke detector had been installed months earlier by Medford firefighters when they came to the house for an unrelated 911 call, fire officials said. Crews from Medford Fire-Rescue and Jackson County Fire District 5 responded to the fire at 1:25 a.m., according to dispatch logs. Five engines and 17 personnel arrived about seven minutes after the blaze was reported. Crews had the fire out within minutes. The fire damaged the kitchen and much of the attic space over the kitchen and living room. A damage estimate was not immediately available, though fire officials said the "extensive" damage rendered the structure unsafe to live in. Crews were working with the American Red Cross to find a place to stay for a man and his daughter who were displaced by the fire.
