Sophomore point guard Brittney Newcomb scored 15 points and fellow guard Andi Bagdan contributed six rebounds, five assists and two steals as the Comets pulled away for a 47-38 victory. Crater (1-2) trailed 25-23 at the half, but its defense held Hidden Valley without a field goal in the third quarter. "Essentially, we came out and pressured a little bit better," said first-year Comets' coach JT Thomas. "They had a majority of their turnovers early in the third quarter and that gave us a cushion." The Mustangs (2-1) trimmed one point off the Crater lead in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the deficit. Advertisement "Crater came out in the second half and made some adjustments on defense," said Hidden Valley coach Mike Schaefer. "They were pressing us but that wasn't what was getting us. It was the pace of our offense. We took some poor shots because of it." Newcomb also had five steals for Crater, while post Alana Harding chipped in with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Hidden Valley didn't help its cause by hitting just 11 of 25 from the foul line. "We didn't score a field goal (in the third quarter) and we miss 14 free throws," said Schaefer. Phoenix (1-3) had cut the lead to 20-17 before the break, but Yreka went on a 7-0 spurt to close the second quarter. MARY'S 38 — At Glendale, hot-shooting Glendale shot 59 percent from the field to bury St. Mary's and hand the Crusaders their first loss of the season. Gretchen Owens led a balanced Pirates' attack with 15 points. Ashley Marriott added 13 points and Candyce Pate chipped in 13. Glendale soared to an 18-6 after one period and stretched their advantage to 39-13 at halftime. Whitney Adderson paced St. Mary's (3-1) with 13 points. ST.
