Roseburg splits in a crucial SOC doubleheader with South Medford ROSEBURG - For a while, it looked like Roseburg might not be a shoo-in for the No. 2 Southern Oregon Conference berth to the state playoffs. With a one-game edge on third-place Crater entering its final doubleheader Saturday, Roseburg found itself down 2-0 to South Medford in the sixth inning of the first game. But single runs in the bottoms of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings gave the Indians a 3-2 victory. That wrapped up the runner-up spot because Crater lost its opener to North Medford. In Game 2, South Medford notched a 4-3 triumph. "It was just a good effort by the kids to come back after being down 2-0," said Roseburg coach Craig Munion. "We kept plugging away. It was a good win for us because it meant a lot to get the second berth." The Indians (17-5, 10-4 SOC) scored the winning run when Shannon Burmeister singled in the eighth and moved to second base on Brooke Charles' grounder to first base. With two outs, Shelley Hansen singled home Burmeister to end the game. Hansen was 2-for-3. Pitcher Charles kept Roseburg in it throughout, allowing four hits and striking out 10. She walked one. "Brooke has pitched really well the last couple weeks," said Munion. "She's starting to get her control back, starting to hit her spots now." Ashley Mendenhall and Allison Rader had two hits each for Roseburg. In the second game, South Medford scored three runs in the first inning to take control. Jackie Chaplin led off with a triple and scored on Katie Kaufman's grounder to second. Mickie Conley reached on an error and Amanda Blair walked, then both runners scored on Jennifer Mendenhall's double. The Panthers scored the winning run in the third when Blair singled in Conley, who had singled and stole second. GRANTS PASS 10, KLAMATH UNION 0 - At Grants Pass, Amber Gallego pitched a five-hitter in the second game and went 5-for-6 in the SOC twin bill. Gallego drove in three runs in the first game and combined with Amy Durbin and Clair Highfield, both 2-for-4, to lead the offense. Jessica Morton pitched a one-hitter in the opener, with eight strikeouts and one walk. In Game 2, Gallego struck out six and walked one. She and Durbin had two hits each and Ashley Bellum scored three runs. ASHLAND 8-0, EAGLE POINT 1-2 - At Eagle Point, Jessica Jeeninga blanked Ashland on five hits and Eagle Point got two run-scoring hits in the second inning to salvage the split in the nightcap. Jeeninga struck out two and walked three for the Eagles (10-13, 3-11 SOC). In the second inning, Kristina Bateman reached on an error and K.C. Grieve singled. Krystin Brooks, who was 2-for-2, and Becca Roa followed with RBI singles. In the first game, Megan Beugli was 2-for-4, including a two-run triple in the seventh inning for Ashland. Beugli was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits, fanning five and walking one. Losing pitcher Jamie Williams gave up four hits and only one earned run. She fanned five and walked one.
