De Luca, Santana lead Phoenix to third place Sunday Jan 28, 2018 at 2:00 AM COTTAGE GROVE — Ezra De Luca and Elijah Santana each won their respective weight class Saturday, leading Phoenix to third place in the two-day, 22-school Cottage Grove Invitational. Phoenix finished with 145.5 points behind winner Crescent Valley (180) and runner-up Glide (167.5). Competing at 152 pounds, Santana (26-9), who scored 30 team points and won all of his matches by fall, pinned Tyrell Reynoso (21-14) of Madras in 3:02 in the first-place match. DeLuca (15-9), who scored 28 team points, pinned his first three opponents before winning by decision, 7-4, over Glide’s Gage Dill (22-6) to capture first at 113. The Pirates had four others who placed: 138-pounder Michael Walker (fourth), 145-pounder Dalton Samis (fifth), 182-pounder Dane Johnson (fifth) and heavyweight Ishmael DeLaToree (third). “It was a good set of wins for us to go into the postseason,” said Pirates coach Jon Gay, adding that his team exceeded expectations for the tournament. “Our kids are starting to surprise us a little bit.” Cascade Christian’s Ryan Vidlak placed second at 106 pounds and Cody Havniear fourth at 120. Vidlak (15-4), who scored 22 team points, pinned his opponents in the quarterfinals and semifinals before losing by technical fall (18-2 in 4:40) to Crescent Valley’s Chance Lamer (28-3) in the first-place match. CRATER CLASSIC: At Central Point, host Crater handled all four of its opponents in the dual-meet event. The Comets got started by sweeping Ashland for an 82-0 win, then defeated Del Norte (Crescent City, Calif.) 74-6, Anderson (Calif.) 71-12 and Grants Pass 55-19. After falling to Crater, Ashland was edged 36-30 by Anderson and then lost 57-18 to Grants Pass. Grants Pass won four straight duals to open the tournament, including victories of 47-35 over Anderson, 45-33 over Del Norte and 51-9 over Wildcat 51-9, before running into Crater. Crater had three wrestlers win all five of their matches on the mat. Hunter Hiatt amassed four pins at 132 pounds and one at 126. Logan Lowder had four falls and a major decision, mostly at 170. Cody Fisher was 5-0 with five pins at 195. Ashland’s Trevor Fulton was 4-1 at 170, with three falls, and the Grizzlies’ Zach Adler was 4-0 with three falls at 220. EAGLE POINT GOES 3-2: At Albany, Eagle Point managed a 3-2 record in the Tod Surmon Invitational dual-match tournament at West Albany. The Eagles defeated Ridgeview, 55-24; Mt. View No. 2, 49-30; and Forest Grove, 50-27. They lost to Mt. View No. 1, 64-10, and West Albany, 37-32. Thomas Zomerdyk led Eagle Point with a 5-0 record at 113 pounds, which included two forfeit wins. He also had a technical fall and a major decision. Bradey Thrash was 4-0 at 126. He won two matches by fall in a total of 4:08 and added a major decision. Freddy Barajas went 3-0 at 106, including a fall and a forfeit. Girls STATE QUALIFIER: At Springfield, Phoenix’s Emma Truex, a sophomore returning state champion, took first place at 125 pounds in the two-day state qualifier at Thurston High. Truex won all five of her matches by fall, including a pin against Lincoln’s Trynadii Rocha in 1:27 in the championship.
