Perhaps because most of them accomplished personal records on the biggest stage of the season. Cascade Christian produced three of the seconds, including two in girls events, helping it take the first-day team lead with 23 points through five events. Trudy Burns took silver in the javelin with a PR of 138 feet, 6 inches, and Challengers teammate Cheyenne Auchard did likewise in the discus, hitting her best with a throw of 120-7. Dante Olson, who has only been throwing the shot put a couple weeks, produced a PR heave of 48-4 for Cascade Christian, which is third among the boys teams with 14 points. For the St. Mary's girls, who are tied for ninth with nine points, Marissa Dobry placed second in the 3,000 meters in 10 minutes, 33.44 seconds. The 3A, 2A and 1A meets began Thursday and finish today. The 6A, 5A and 4A championships get underway today with a handful of finals and preliminaries in running events. The most unlikely of high finishers might have been Olson, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior who will attend Montana on a football scholarship. Olson hadn't competed in track since the seventh grade and had knee surgery on New Year's Eve. He was cleared to start running three weeks ago and competed in his first meet less than two weeks ago. Needless to say, he was relatively fresh. Coquille's Brandon Bowen won with a mark of 52-8¼. He had four counting throws and all surpassed Olson's best. Similarly, Olson was 2½ feet better than his nearest challenger. “I just kept getting better, kept working out with the coaches and stuff,” said Olson. “God blessed me and I got to put everything together and got a good throw off.” It happened on his first attempt, and all but one of his tries were an improvement on his previous best of 45-1. “It felt good for sure,” he said. “I could definitely tell it was my best throw of the year.” The senior Burns made a return trip to state after missing out last year. “Honestly, I was more excited than nervous,” she said. “I love this meet and it was really exciting to be back.” She finished behind league rival Delaney Hall of Lakeview, who made her winning mark of 144-10 on her first attempt. Burns' previous best was 131-6. She was seeded third and was eager to improve on the mark she achieved as a sophomore. She did that by more than 30 feet. Auchard wasn't counting on contributing as significantly as she did to Cascade Christian's team total. “I was very nervous,” said the senior. “There were a lot of people throwing farther than me coming in. I didn't expect to place the way I did, so it's very exciting.” Auchard was seeded fifth, but she'd built up nicely to the state meet. She had PRs in her previous two meets, last week hitting 117-8 at the district championships. “It was really exciting to get that mark,” she said. “I was looking for over 120.” Lindsay McShane won the discus at 144-7. Two other girls placed for the Challengers. In the long jump, freshman Kara Ash was fifth at 15-8¼, and freshman Sophia Sellers was sixth in the high jump at 4-10. St. Mary's Sarah Settimo was eighth in the long jump at 15-4½. Prospect's Lakota Sizemore placed eighth in the 1A discus with a throw of 99-1. Dobry, a junior who ran by herself in winning the district by nearly 2 minutes last week, tried a different tactic against 3A leader Maya Rayle, of Catlin Gabel. “It didn't go as I had hoped,” said Dobry. “That was the first race I kind of tried to go out slower. But it was a good race overall and I'm happy with the effort.” She used a conservative approach because a week earlier, she did the first 400 meters in the low 70-second range and thought that sapped her strength at the finish. The plan this time was to have the energy to “fight to the end,” but Rayle, whose time was 10:20.28, opened too big of a gap. Dobry led most of the race until 1½ laps remained. “I just didn't have it, I guess,” said Dobry. What she does have is the state-leading time in the 1,500, less than 2 seconds ahead of Rayle, and those two will go at it in that event today. Cascade Christian's Tim McPherson placed third in the boys 3,000, conjuring a strong last lap to overtake a couple runners and finish in a season-best 9:16.53. Umatilla's Fabian Cardenas broke the 20-year-old meet record by 5 seconds with a time of 8:41.23. The most impressive performance of the day was in the pole vault, where La Pine junior Justin Petz broke the meet record by more than a foot, clearing 16-6, and came within a whisker of clearing 17-0.
