Mail Tribune 100: June 29, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 29, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 29, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 29, 1916 FARMERS LEAVE TO SEE ALFALFA DEMONSTRATION Twenty-five farmers interested in alfalfa growing left in cars at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon to attend the alfalfa demonstration held on the Mike Hanley and Bernst ranches, near Central Point. On the two ranches some twenty plots have been treated with different varieties of fertilizer, all of the plots showing good results with the exception of those treated with nitrate of soda and pure phosphorus. Many farmers have been paying high prices for these fertilizers and have been at a loss to understand the lack of results. In all cases, however, where any fertilizer containing any form of sulfur was applied the results were most satisfactory. Where check plots were not worth cutting those a few feet away treated with sulfur showed a fine second crop. According to Pathologist Cate, the pyrites that will be available in immense quantities at the opening of the Blue Ledge district will furnish an ideal sulfur fertilizer. This product can be ground here, if railroad transportation is available, and sold at from $8 to $10 a ton. The pyrites in its present form contains about 30 percent sulfur and can be easily concentrated to a content of 50 percent. Raw lump pyrites was applied last spring to several plots and showed a noticeable improvement in the crop. However, if the pyrites is ground as fine as sulfur and applied at 100 pounds to the acre, remarkable results may be expected, lasting over two or three years. At present pure sulfur is the most practical form to use. The war, however, has boosted the price of sulfur to about $50 a ton. As soon as cuttings are finished and all available data has been gathered a bulletin will be published giving to growers the exact findings as to fertilization of alfalfa.
