SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: OR-7's mate likely followed similar path Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 2, 2015 at 7:16 PM Updated May 2, 2015 at 7:17 PM Posted May. 2, 2015 at 7:16 PM Updated May 2, 2015 at 7:17 PM » Social News Has the question been asked and what is the answer as to how wolf OR-7's mate appeared? The April 28 Associated Press story of a "new lone wolf" says "a mate somehow turned up for OR-7 in Southern Oregon." Professional biologists surely have more to say than that. — Ed D., Central Point Well, Ed, we at Since You Asked Central have been nothing more than raving peeping toms and yentas when it comes to OR-7's sex life like a veritable TMZ of the wildlife world. OR-7's rather remarkable journey began when he left northeast Oregon's Imnaha Pack and strode out on his own, heading south and west into southwest Oregon and eventually Northern California before returning to eastern Jackson County to settle down. That's where GPS data shows he likely met his mate, with whom he had three pups last summer, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DNA testing on scat found near the family's den last summer did not pinpoint what pack the female came from, but tests show she's definitely related to the Snake River and Minam packs, says Michelle Dennehy, spokeswoman for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's wolf program. Biologists have long said that there was no reason to assume that no other wolf had, or will, take that same general path from Northeast Oregon to the Cascades. And that's likely what this female did, Dennehy says. Once wolves are in the same general area, they can track each other by following the scent of their scat, Dennehy says. Maybe not the fairy tale hook-up that some might want, but it worked out for them, Ed. Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
