Graham, 35, has been a math teacher at Ashland High since 2000, one year after guiding the Chieftain girls track team to a fourth-place finish at the Class 3A state meet. "In mid-year, being able to find somebody is always tough," said Kemper. "To be able to find someone like Ron at this time, we were pretty darn lucky. He’s very well respected as a teacher in the high school and we just get that much more benefit by him extending his day and commitment to Ashland." Graham takes over for Bob Julian Jr., who stepped down one month ago to focus on his passion for coaching distance runners but said he’d likely remain with the track team as an assistant coach. Julian was hired in the summer of 2001 to take over for his father, Bob Julian Sr. Advertisement Graham was an all-conference offensive lineman for the Southern Oregon University football team and graduated in 1993. After spending a year on the staff at Central High in Independence, he became an assistant under Stan Goodell at Rogue River in 1996 and assumed the head position the following year. After three years at the helm in Rogue River, Graham took time off from coaching to focus on starting a family, but Kemper said he’s raring to get things going again in Ashland and has already started recruiting athletes for the spring season. Wednesday’s hiring also continues Kemper’s goal to have 100 percent of the coaches at Ashland High also be teachers in the school system.
