North Medford gets first win under Beck BEND - North Medford ushered in the John Beck era with an impressive performance on Friday night. The fifth-ranked Black Tornado demonstrated complete domination on both sides of the line of scrimmage and blasted host Mountain View of Bend 42-7 in a season-opening non-conference victory. Beck, North's defensive coordinator last year, took over head coach duties from Rod Rumrey, who stepped down after 13 years. Beck installed Brett Timmerman as his starting quarterback against the Cougars. Timmerman, a 6-foot, 188-pound junior, responded by passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 15 passes in 20 attempts. "We just thought we would go with it," said Beck, about his quarterback choice. "He (Timmerman) had great composure. He was calm and cool the whole time." North exhibited a varied offense that amassed 565 yards. The Black Tornado gained 259 yards on the ground and 306 through the air. Beck credited offensive coordinator Brent Barry for North's effectiveness. "Coach Barry mixed it up great," said Beck. "He did a great job of keeping them off balance tonight." Senior tailback Justin MacLauchlan capped the march with a 21-yard TD run and Shawn Hale made the first of six PATs with 10:05 remaining in the opening quarter. The Black Tornado took nine plays to cover 57 yards on its next possession, with Tyler Engle scoring from 2 yards out. North used some deception to score with 50 seconds left before halftime. Flanker Beau Hovland took one step back from the line of scrimmage and received a lateral from Timmerman, then tossed to a wide-open Travis Poulton for a 59-yard TD. Poulton, who was only in for that one offensive play, performed a key role on defense at free safety. In the second half, Timmerman connected with Brian Weeks for touchdown passes of 48 and 11 yards. MacLauchlan opened North's second-half scoring with a 14-yard TD run. MacLauchlan led North's ground attack with 146 yards, while Weeks hauled in a team-high seven passes for 125 yards. Mountain View was limited to 113 yards rushing and 32 through the air. Beck gave North's defense mixed reviews. "Defensively we played well at times," said Beck. "We had some mental breakdowns. But we made the big plays and shut down their passing game pretty well." ASHLAND 26, COLLEGE PARK 25 - At Ashland, senior quarterback Cameron Voget tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Decker with 18 seconds left to lift the Grizzlies to a non-conference win. Voget threw for a game-high 194 yards and three touchdowns, all going to Decker. Decker caught five passes for 95 yards, including a 47-yard strike from Voget. ROSEBURG 35, BEND 27 - At Roseburg, fourth-ranked Roseburg led 35-7 in the third quarter at Finlay Field before Bend closed the gap against the Indians reserves. Roseburg senior quarterback Adam Hazel ran for one touchdown and passed for two more. Rod Cope led the ground attack with 144 yards on 24 carries. Bend was forced to punt after receiving the opening kickoff and the Indians marched 56 yards for a touchdown. Hazel scored on a broken play from four yards. Hazel passed for the Indians next two touchdowns, connecting with Cope for eight yards in the first quarter and with Cory Whitman in the second quarter for six yards. Kellen Walker's 51-yard touchdown reception from second-string quarterback Asa Yraguen gave Roseburg a 28-0 lead. MAZAMA 23, KLAMATH UNION 19 - At Klamath Falls, Mazama avenged a loss to Klamath Union in last year's Canal Bowl with a non-conference win. The Class 4A Pelicans blew past the Vikings in last season's contest 38-12. GRANTS PASS 34, SOUTH EUGENE 19 - At Eugene, Grants Pass opened the season by recovering from an early 6-0 deficit behind a pair of Tyler York touchdown receptions and two Tom Martin rushing scores. Senior quarterback Tom Cohen connected with senior wide receiver York for TDs of 35 and four yards during the Cavemen's 21-point second quarter. Martin, a senior tailback, went four yards to the end zone in the first and four yards again in the second.
