The babysitter had made statements to authorities about Corey Fenton, 31, that caused him to temporarily lose custody of his child. Jackson County Circuit Court jurors reached the guilty verdicts Wednesday after hearing testimony all day Tuesday. The Jackson County District Attorney's Office had sought convictions for soliciting second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit second-degree assault, but jurors decided the solicitation and conspiracy crimes related to misdemeanor fourth-degree assault rather than more serious felony second-degree assault. Fenton, who now lives in Roseburg, is scheduled to be sentenced Monday. Prosecutors argued Fenton and his father, Luther Paul Gann, 62, of Medford were angry at the babysitter and met with Gann's friend Debra Blanco in 2012. They offered her marijuana with a street value of $3,000 to $5,000 as partial payment to find someone to beat up the babysitter. Rather than carrying out the scheme, Blanco told authorities about the conversation in which she said the men told her they wanted the babysitter beaten so badly she would never talk again and her brains would be scrambled. Blanco said Fenton gave her a note describing the intended victim and giving detailed instructions on how to reach the babysitter's Klamath Falls home. Fenton testified in court he was not a part of the conversation. While Fenton rolled the dice and went to trial Wednesday, Gann pleaded no contest that morning to solicitation to commit second-degree assault, manufacture of marijuana and two counts of felon in possession of a firearm. No-contest pleas carry the same legal ramifications as guilty pleas. Gann testified in court against his son and said he believed he would be sentenced to probation rather than prison for assisting the prosecution. Gann is scheduled to be sentenced July 24. Defense attorney Matthew Murphy, who represented Fenton, declined to speculate on what sentence Fenton would receive Monday.
