PREP HOOPS: Crater edges Southridge in opener By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Dec 01, 2022 09:34 PM A A GRANTS PASS — If it was an early test the Crater girls basketball team wanted, the Comets certainly got that Thursday night during the Grants Pass Kick-Off. Crater found itself in a nip-and-tuck battle with Class 6A Southridge when Sage Winslow broke a tie with 30 seconds to play and the Comets then held on defensively for a 42-40 season-opening victory. “It felt like we played three games in one,” said Crater head coach Scott Dippel, “but it was a great first game and I’m glad we got out of there with a win.” Winslow finished with six steals and seven points, with none more vital than the go-ahead basket. Southridge had a chance to tie on the ensuing possession but missed an initial shot. After getting an offensive rebound, the Skyhawks kicked the ball out but Addison Dippel was able to deflect the pass and then Winslow gave chase and led to the ball continuing to roll as time ran out. “It was a great defensive stand,” said coach Dippel. “I would’ve liked to get that rebound, obviously, but it worked out and that was a key defensive play right there.” Lydia Traore supplied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Crater (1-0), which next faces host Grants Pass on Friday. Abigail Winslow had six rebounds and Dippel had seven points. Sara Mangan scored 11 points and Genave Vera recorded nine for Southridge. Crater built a 15-7 lead through one quarter behind its defensive pressure and ability to get out in transition, but the Skyhawks used a rebounding advantage to help tighten up the score. “A lot of it tonight was just to kind of see where we’re at,” Dippel said of the early test. “We played in a tight game and made some good decisions down the stretch and some decisions we’ve got to work on.” SOUTHRIDGE (40): Vera 9, Powers 0, Meek 5, Mangan 11, Loitz 6, Patel 0, Stellingwerf 5, Ramirez 2, Peterson 2, Barron 0. GRANTS PASS 42, EUREKA 37: At Grants Pass, Brooke Anderson scored eight of her 26 points in the fourth quarter to help Grants Pass rally for a season-opening win at the Grants Pass Kick-Off. The Cavers (1-0) got five points apiece from Sophie Mock and Brooklyn Wakefield, who also had five rebounds. Anderson also finished with four assists and six rebounds, while Mia Thompson had six rebounds and Raegan Bruner pulled in five boards. RV ADVENTIST 52, EDDYVILLE 22: Emma Bischoff poured in 26 points to go with 10 rebounds and Michaela Porter also had a solid night with 12 points and four rebounds as host Rogue Valley Adventist cruised in the season opener. Isabell Zamora provided nine points and 11 assists for the Red Tail Hawks (1-0), who opened a 25-5 lead by halftime. Boys CRATER 80, WEED 47: At Yreka, Calif., sophomore forward Kyle Bittle scored 26 points in his varsity debut and was one of four Crater players in double figures as the Comets rolled to a win in their season opener at the Yreka Tournament. Crater guards Marcus Idiart and Ashton Acrey finished with 14 points apiece, while Ty Dahlin chipped in 10 to help first-year head coach Bryan Scott win in his debut.
