However, we could not find the little stinker! After a few days the smell subsided, but things continued to get knocked off window ledges.The doors were left open during the day but it wouldn't leave. Then my husband the biologist put two and two together and realized we were dealing with a nocturnal animal. So he sneaked out after dark and turned the lights on and there was a skunk — but it was a western spotted skunk. No one we talked to has seen one. How rare are they? But luckily, not only does state wildlife biologist Steve Niemela believe you, he has corroborating evidence that you likely did stumble upon a western spotted skunk. Spotted skunk sightings here are, uh, kind of spotty, says Niemela, from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. But trail cameras placed in the Evans Creek area in the winter of 2011-12 as part of a Pacific fisher study turned up many pictures of spotted skunks, Niemela says. The area around the town of Applegate contains similar habitat to where the skunks were photographed, so it's with great confidence you can check western spotted skunks off your Uber-Aromaic Bucket List, Delores.
