4 heroes win statewide honors Four Southern Oregon men were honored Friday for their bravery in two separate life-saving acts of heroism. On Oct. 1, 1999, state police trooper Dave Beck helped pull a man out of a burning vehicle. On Feb. 28, three men worked hard to keep a co-worker�s blood pumping after he was suffering a severe electrical shock. The men received medals at a statewide emergency medical services banquet Friday evening. The recipients were nominated by David Cook of Mercy Flights. It�s a way "to say thanks for putting in the effort to do these kind of things," said Cook. "We count on assistance of not just the troopers but all the citizens in the area." Senior Trooper Beck received the Medal of Valor for helping pull a man from a burning pickup truck on Highway 62. He and two unidentified men came upon the accident before emergency personnel. Beck, who is certified to help out in medical situations, has worked with state police for 13 years and is also a dog handler for the agency. The other men honored with Civilian Service Medals were Ross Leslie, Rich Crusos and Chris Canty. The men � employees of International Line Builders, a company that does contract work for Pacific Power � were upgrading power lines in White City when a truck boom hit a 12,000-volt power line and shocked a co-worker who was operating the controls. They stopped the electric current and administered CPR until emergency personnel arrived. Firefighters said the men�s actions were key in bringing the man back to life.
