Light One Candle Youth needs household starters EDITOR'S NOTE: "Light One Candle" is an annual Mail Tribune feature that focuses on a single need of a person, family or agency during the holiday season. For information, call 776-4465 or e-mail [email protected] Senior year of high school can be both exciting and scary for many young people, but one Medford boy is more apprehensive than most. When he graduates from a local high school in June, he'll also move out of foster care and into the world, all on his own. Now 18, the boy has been in foster care since he was 11. He's a smart kid and a good student who maintains a 3.7 grade point average and hopes to start college in September, says Pat Carter, who works in the Independent Living Program run by Community Works. At the same time the young man will be trying to move into an apartment of his own. What he needs more than anything this Christmas are household goods to help outfit his new home. "He doesn't have a grandmother to borrow a coffee pot from," says Carter. "Without a family to fall back on, this can be a hard transition for someone at his age." Donations of dishes, kitchen goods, linens and other basic household supplies would be appreciated. The Independent Living Program helps young people acquire practical skills for living on their own.
