Black Tornado athletes found their names among three of the records that fell during the 15-school meet, but it was Grants Pass that walked away with the big-school team championship in the boys and girls meets. The Cavemen scored 102.93 points to win the boys title, while the GP girls edged North Medford 102.29 to 98.94. Henley swept the small-school divisions. “I think top to bottom, that’s probably the most meet records we’ve had broken in one season at the meet,” said North Medford track and field coach Piet Voskes. “It was a great atmosphere out there today,” added Voskes. “The whole point of the (Medford Rotary Relays) is just to keep the idea that (Bill) Bowerman had originally from early 1940s and mimic that while adding our own modern twist to it.” The newest twist Saturday involved a decathlon team award, where standard decathlon points were given to each school based on marks earned by their top competitor in all field events and the 1,500-meter run. “It’s just something I came up with just kicking things around,” said Voskes, noting the Southwest Conference has decided to adopt the scoring as a special part of its district meet later this year. The North Medford girls and Grants Pass boys won their respective decathlon awards. In more traditional fashion, the North Medford boys quartet of Brian Schireman, Javel Stewart, Cody Matthews and Tyren Wolfe set one of the meet records by cruising to victory in the 4x100 relay in 43.21 seconds, which is the third-fastest mark in Oregon this year. The old record of 43.88 was set by Hidden Valley in 2013. Schireman, Stewart and Wolfe were joined by Logan Stone in winning the 4x200 relay (1:31.38) and 4x400 relay (3:32.69). “Those three guys who were on all three winning relay teams just had a day,” said Voskes. “They all looked strong.” The 1,500 saw the boys and girls records fall, with Ridgeview’s Albert Hesse (4:18.10) doing the honors in the boys race and St. Mary’s Marissa Dobry (4:37.52) eclipsing the record she set one year ago. Sawyer Heckard of Marshfield set the previous boys record last year at 4:22.53. Dobry, who won in 4:45.15 last year, dominated her race to finish 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Mahala Norris of Roseburg. Her time is the fastest in the state among all classes. “That 4:37 by Marissa Dobry is a great time,” said Voskes. “She did that all by herself. She had probably an 8-second lead throughout the entire race, she was impressive.” Also impressive was the winning boys distance medley crew of Cal Duke, Andy Monroe, Derek Tripp and Walter Vail of Crater. The relay race features distances of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600, and the Crater quartet finished in record time at 10:35.65. The previous meet record of 10:41 was set in 2010 by a North Medford group that included future Division I runners Drew Jordan and Stetson Smith. North Medford’s trio of Avery Fisk, Emily Shaw and Emily Grether smashed the previous meet record in the girls team discus with a combined total of 291 feet, 5½ inches. The old mark of 278-8 was set in 2007 by South Medford. In the girls team javelin, North Medford’s Emily Shaw, Anna Lorenz and Elise Snowden set a record with their combined total of 344-10, just ahead of Roseburg’s 343-6 last year. In the girls team high jump, Aubree Esterline, Brooke Johnson and Keelyn Coe of Grants Pass broke the record set by North Medford last year (14-6¼) by totaling 15-0. Other marks ranked among the state’s top 10: Henley’s Dylan Castle won the boys 300 hurdles in 39.94 (second); Ashland’s Emma Hickman won the girls shot put in 38-11¾ (eighth); Lorenz won the girls javelin in 127-9 (eighth); and Ashland’s Dominic Meads won the boys discus in 149-5 (ninth). The Grants Pass girls winning relay time in the 4x400 of 4:10.61 stands fifth in the state, while runner-up North Medford’s time of 4:14.08 is ninth. Athlete of the meet honors, which recognizes the highest-scoring individuals at the meet, went to Henley’s Zenaida Bresser (girls) and Hidden Valley’s Casey Carter and Jordan Vasquez (boys). Bresser totaled 11½ points in four events while the Mustang tandem of Carter and Vasquez each scored 9.9 points in their four events.
