Grand jurors Tuesday returned an indictment charging Jurich with a single count of murder, said Matt Chancellor, deputy district attorney for Jackson County. The seven-person panel heard about two hours of testimony from police and civilian witnesses, Chancellor said. Investigators say Jurich, 24, bludgeoned to death David Evan Rice, a paroled sex offender who lived a transient lifestyle. Rice’s body was found Oct. 29 in a room at the Relax Inn near the south Ashland interchange with Interstate 5. Police have not discussed the weapon used or any possible motive in the killing, Ashland’s first murder in eight years. Jurich fled and was arrested in Reno, Nev., five days after Rice’s body was discovered. Reno police said Jurich confessed to the crime. Local police said Jurich was intoxicated at the time of the slaying. Paroled in 2001 on a burglary conviction, Jurich had been panhandling around Ashland for the past six months, police said. If convicted of murder, Jurich would spend a minimum of 25 years in prison before he is eligible for parole, but he also could be incarcerated for life. The death penalty is reserved for Oregon’s most serious crime — aggravated murder — which includes the killing of children, police officers and more than one person in the same crime. Jurich was lodged Friday in the Jackson County Jail, where he remains without bail.
