COLLEGE FOOTBALL OSU running backs look to make mark Comment By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times MailTribune.com By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Apr. 8, 2015 at 5:31 PM By Kevin Hampton Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Apr. 8, 2015 at 5:31 PM » Social News CORVALLIS — They know the names: Melvin Gordon, Robert Turbin, Michael Williams. Oregon State players don't have to delve deep into the football records of Wisconsin and Utah State to see what some of the running backs on Gary Andersen's teams have accomplished. Melvin Gordon finished his final season at Wisconsin last fall with 2,587 yards (the second-most in FBS history) and 29 touchdowns. Gordon is projected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft. In 2011, Robert Turbin rushed for 1,517 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior at Utah State and now plays for the Seattle Seahawks. That same season, Turbin's teammate Michael Williams finished with 870 yards and nine scores and is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "It's definitely a positive seeing the backs that he's come in contact with and worked with and developed," OSU senior Storm Woods said. "So I'm just looking to be the next in line for that, being one of those backs that has a phenomal senior year and follows his dream of getting drafted. "All that takes from me is hard work and being a student of the game and being a sponge and absorbing everything he throws at us." For now, the running backs are busy with the basics of Andersen's spread offense. Running backs coach Telly Lockette coached in a pro-style offense at University of South Florida, so he knows exactly what the players are going through this spring. "Right now they're trying to understand playing fast, lining up, reading their keys and go," Lockette said. "I'm pleased with where the guys are right now. Those guys are showing up every day. It's a struggle right now because we're trying to make the transition from both offenses. Once they get into it and get a little more research into the offense, I think they'll be better." Andersen used several backs at Utah State and said the Beavers need a solid group for his system. Woods, Chris Brown and Damien Haskins provide a varied skill set. "We're going to need all three of those kids without question," Andersen said. "We're going to need Ryan (Nall) in there, too, so it's another thing for Ryan to deal with." Woods has shown a blend of speed and power. He is also adept and catching passes out of the backfield. As the most experienced of the running backs, Woods is able to step up as a leader of the group. "It always helps to have a guy that's been through the fire before," Lockette said. "That's in your room to help the young guys along the way and to teach them the certain things they know to go into the Pac-12." At 5-foot-9, 224-pounds, Haskins provides some punch. Brown has made major strides this spring. He is a naturally gifted runner and has worked hard to hone his skills. "I feel pretty good about it," Brown said. "I still have a long way to come before the season. I stay out and work every day, watch film every day, get in the playbook. I'm pretty satisfied with it." Andersen expects his running backs to play with a physical nature. He hasn't seen enough of it so far this spring. "We want to see the pile go from, 'Hey, they gained 2 yards,' to we jump up and we gain four yards," Andersen said. Woods said the backs have to learn to play with an aggressive mentality. "When you come out here and you touch the ball, you've got to run mad," he said. "If you don't, you're going to get hit in the mouth. Running backs don't like getting hit in the mouth. So I think all we have to do is come out here and really lock in and focus and just run mad." No passing fancy Getting the passing game up and running consistently has been tough for the Beavers this spring. With an ongoing quarterback competition and the receivers learning the offense, it's been slow going. Andersen said the receivers have been struggling with man coverage. "We're getting pressed out of things pretty good and completely disrupting the pace of the offense sometimes and the throw game," he said. "That's a big part of so many issues we have right now. If we just sit back playing 4-3 zone coverage every single time it would be a lot easier for the offensive line, it would be a lot easier for the wide receivers, running backs, quarterbacks. But we're not going to do that. We're going to do what we do on the defensive side." On Wisconsin Andersen was able to follow the Wisconsin basketball team through its second-straight trip to the Final Four and matchup with Duke in the title game on Monday night. The Badgers lost to the Blue Devils, 68-63. Andersen said he was able to get to know many of the Wisconsin players last season. "I was able to talk to them a few times as they made their run last year," he said. "They are a great group of kids. They are as tight, close-knit of a team a year ago that I have probably been around or seen, from a distance. I loved to go watch their games and watch those kids compete. "Watching them (Monday) night on the podium at the end was tough, but that was a great run."
