Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 1, 2005 Web site with data on abusers starts today Thirty-two predatory sex offenders in Jackson County will be profiled By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune A new Internet site profiling the county’s most dangerous sex offenders will go live today. Accessed through Jackson County’s home page ( www.jacksoncounty.org ), the site will display photos of 32 predatory sex offenders supervised by the county’s parole and probation department. The page also lists offenders’ addresses, places of employment, descriptions of their vehicles, license plate numbers and information on how they committed their crimes. The Web site represents a new form of notification for the county’s predatory sex offenders, not an indication that they have violated conditions of their release, said Danny Jordan, director of Jackson County Community Justice. "I do think, at least, it increases public awareness," Jordan said. "I hope it increases public safety." The Web link will be on the right-hand side of the county’s home page grouped with several other popular sites, Jordan said. The page initially displays offenders’ photos, names and addresses. More information on each perpetrator can be obtained by clicking on the photos, Jordan said. Advertisement The site also contains a link to frequently asked questions and child-safety strategies. In the planning phases for the past two years, the Web page initially was set to go up two weeks ago but experienced delays. Community Justice supervises a total of 419 sex offenders, most of whom are not considered predatory. A predatory designation results from a combination of factors, including the age and gender of victims, whether the perpetrator knew the victim or used violence, and the offender’s history of similar crimes. The county is home to 16 other convicted predatory sex offenders not listed on the new Web site. These offenders have served their sentences and are no longer subject to any form of supervision other than registering their addresses with Oregon State Police. An additional 423 convicted sex offenders not considered "predators" live unsupervised in the county, though they are registered with OSP. OSP provides lists of sex offenders living within a particular neighborhood or town, a service that Community Justice does not offer.
