After watching a nostalgic presentation of "Operation USO!" by the Rogue Music Theater, my three dining companions and I were still feeling seduced by Beth Baker's soulful songs — and a little peckish. We, along with several prom-bound duos who also seemed to recognize the restaurant's romantic sense of time and place, were cheerfully greeted and quickly seated by attentive staff. The menu's nods to the circa 1940s Big Apple were both obvious and intriguing. Passing on the SoHo french onion soup and Manhattan mushrooms, I ordered the Hell's Kitchen Jambalaya, a spicy mix of Andouille sausage, succulent shrimp, chunks of chicken and chopped tomatoes served over a steaming bed of Cajun rice. For just $15.95, the spicy dish has enough heat to satisfy my taste — and enough volume to easily feed four. Advertisement "Wow! That's a lot of jambalaya," we all commented. While I was eyeing the monster mound of goodness, my dining companion's selections were arriving at the table. Another ample dish was the "Staten Island Steamer." This platter of fresh broccoli and cauliflower florets was studded with red potatoes, corn cobbettes and carrots. A double serving of cheese sauce was needed to envelope the garden cornucopia. The diner enjoyed his cheesey-veggies very much, but did say the addition of corn-holders would be appreciated. "I didn't know the cobbettes were there until the sauce was all over them," he said, sadly. "Now they're too slippery to eat." The "Fishmonger's Find" — a thick halibut steak covered in Panko bread crumbs this particular evening — changes regularly and is priced according to the day's market. The halibut came with rice pilaf. Cooked just a moment too long for the diner to rate it a perfect 10, the dish was nonetheless very tasty, she said. The final order from of our quad was the "Mac is Back in Town" $10.95 macaroni. The bubbling blend of Gruyere and Swiss cheese sprinkled with toasted bread crumbs arrived in its own piping hot crock. The two nutty cheeses are a delicious shift from the traditional cheddar. However, we mac'n'cheese aficionados felt the white sauce, while very tasty to the tongue, was just a bit thin for this favorite comfort food. "I really like the flavor," said the Mac Man. "But I wish the sauce was a bit thicker and creamier." All entrees came with a choice of a cup of soup or a small dinner salad. The soup was a mushroom and Brie mix. The meaty mushrooms held up well in the rich, creamy broth, we all agreed. Dessert was a must. One of us opted for an Irish Coffee, but the other three jumped in with all arteries and ordered a trio of $5.95 specialties which included the "Big Yellow Taxi" bananas sauteed in a dark rum praline sauce, topped with vanilla bean ice cream, Fifth Avenue Creme Brulee "The best I have had in years and years," said the former fish eater, now clearly enjoying her brulee. And finally, a special addition to the night's menu, flourless chocolate cake. Dense darkly sinful chocolate luxuriating under a blanket of sweet whipped cream.
