Nuckles MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 2, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Oct. 2, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Don Nuckles, 87, passed away at home September 29, 2014 from complications following a heart attack. Don was born in Ellensburg, Wash. February 12, 1927 to Bert B. Nuckles and Grace Cahoon. During WWII he drove a school bus at age 16 and joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. He worked as a lumber superintendent for the Ellensburg Lumber Company, which later became Boise Cascade. He transferred his young family to Spokane and then to Yakima. In 1972 he came to the Rogue Valley as Director of Lumber Industries in Southern Oregon. In 1983 he retired from Boise. He had a shop built and did a lot of hobby projects. He was an outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, and spend time camping in his R.V. with his wife and grandchildren. In 1990 he and his wife went to Australia on a year teacher fellowship exchange. Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay; son, Robert Nuckles of Auburn, Wash.; daughter, Conni Green of Kirkland, Wash.; granddaughters, Kelli Ewing and Katie Hayes; grandsons, Parker, Kerry and Kyler Green; great-grandsons, Isaiah Ewing and Porter Hayes; great-granddaughters, Alison and Cassidy Ewing and Henley Hayes; sisters Marilyn Thayer of Ellensburg, Wash. and Dixie Johnson of Anacortes, Wash.; and 16 nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his son, Scott Nuckles; sisters, Dorothy Phillips, Fern Smith, and Charlotte Smelcer. Don was well respected by the lumber industry and the people who worked under him. He was a WWII Vet and received an honorable discharge. He was a wonderful husband, awesome dad, and Papa to five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In later years Don belonged to S.O.T.I.A, The Elks Club, and The Elks R.V. Club. Don was a simple man but a giant in his own right. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2014 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery.
