The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office made the official identification at 3 p.m. Friday, and notified next of kin. The 26-year-old Maleski had been living in a transient camp near Tom Pearce Park and launched his kayak in that area, during extremely high, dangerous water. His boat was later found empty below Caveman Bridge. Marine Deputy Ernie Fields recovered the body on Friday. Fields had been on the lookout for Maleski’s body, and has also been looking for any sign of 84-year-old Donald DuBose, an Alzheimer’s patient who walked away from an adult care home last week on Avenue de Teresa east of Grants Pass. Maleski’s body was spotted by Gary Woolsey, who was walking his dogs near his Quail Lane home around 9:15 a.m. Friday. Woolsey, who owned Hellgate Excursions jetboat trips from 1973 until 1986, said he’s seen five or six drowning victims over the years along the river. One of them was 17-year-old Eric Hagan, who drowned in May, 1998 while riverboarding with some friends at Whitehorse Park. Woolsey spotted the body at Brushy Chutes, close to the place he found the body on Friday.
