After 2 days stuck in a drain pipe, dog-tired 'Dutchess' rescued safely Trenten Harrison looked for his dog Dutchess for two days. He thought she ran away during Tuesday night's thunderstorm while he was bowling at Lava Lanes. Dutchess ran, but only got as far as a drainage ditch across the street from Harrison's 3868 Springbrook Road home in Medford. She burrowed into a metal drainage pipe, about 18 inches in diameter, became mired in muck and got stuck. Harrison, 17, thought Dutchess was gone for good. He looked for her Tuesday night and Wednesday without any luck. But Thursday morning his grandmother, Tina Harrison, heard the dog's howls from across the street. Dutchess had crawled nearly the length of the pipe, which runs under the intersection of Springbrook and Hollyhock Drive, and was wedged about 5 feet away from the other end. The Harrisons called Medford Quick Response and Jackson County Animal Control. With the help of some shovel-wielding neighbors, workers from these agencies used a water hose and a suction device to clear mud and gravel away from the light-brown and white dog. "I'd have torn the whole street up to just to get her out," said Harrison. The rescue effort started around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. About four hours later, Dutchess was able to crawl free with some coaching from Harrison and his friend, 25-year-old Shon Graham, and Harrison's Rottweiler, Bear. Wet, caked with mud and shaken up, Dutchess shuffled across the street to recuperate in Harrison's kitchen. After keeping her rescuers busy for hours, Dutchess didn't wait for anyone to follow, Harrison said.
