Isn’t there a pothole hot line to report those to? They’re starting to take their toll on my car. — Dave L., Medford You’re right on both counts, Dave. Cory Crebbin, Medford public works director, says, "We are seeing a lot of potholes!" He said it’s related to the heavy rains. He said when you get a crack in the asphalt, and add water, then add a heavy tire running over it, you get hydrostatic pressure that widens that crack (since the water has nowhere else to go). Then more water fills the crack, then add a heavy tire running over it, and you can see where this is going. Advertisement Another thing the rain is doing is turning the subgrade rock beneath the asphalt layers to mud, so that asphalt’s just getting it from all sides. Our city doesn’t have a giant bat light to shine into the sky, but it does have a pothole phone number, which is 774-2600. There’s someone at the phone from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and otherwise it’s an answering service. Crebbin said while they don’t have staff patrolling for potholes, they do have Quick Response Team trucks loaded up with the necessary equipment, and the QRT crew gets to the reported potholes usually in a day or two.
