Coffee house scales back moving plan BY WENDY SIPOREN TALENT -- Despite a no-exceptions policy to the city's building moratorium, the owners of the Espresso Shack still plan to move to a larger location down the street. At a special City Council meeting Monday, the council voted unanimously to deny the request from Gail and Herb Desentz to allow them to install a larger water meter at their new location at the corner of Talent Avenue and Valley View Road. The larger meter is required by building code because of the number of water-using facilities desired for the business. But shop owner Gail Desentz said she was pleased with the council's attitude toward their dilemma. "The council wanted to help us and everyone wanted to get around this," said Desentz. "I think they helped us as much as they could." By making an exception to the water-induced building moratorium, the city opens itself up to potential lawsuits by other individuals seeking exemptions. Instead of installing a larger meter, Desentz says she and her husband will determine how they can best operate with the existing water meter, including installing only one bathroom or contracting out dishwashing services. With only one bathroom, she said the health department allows seating for 15 inside with an additional 8 seats outside. "It's not our first choice, but ... the council left us with a lot of options and a lot of decisions to make," she said. "The bottom line is we're going to make the move."
