PREP ROUNDUP Woodburn ends year for Phoenix WOODBURN -- There was a silver lining to Phoenix's 4-0 girls soccer loss to Woodburn Tuesday in the Class 3A-2A-1A state playoffs. As coach Dan Sporrer put it: A very young Pirates squad made it to the second round, and that's something he feels good about. Phoenix ended the season with a 9-4-3 record. "We played a very talented team, that played much differently from any other team we've played all season," Sporrer said. "We had really mucky, slippery conditions, and not many of our kids had replaceables (spikes), and it showed." He said both teams had a hard time getting footing, especially his defenders. Sporrer added that the Pirates also might have had a case of the nerves in the first half of the match. "Only a few players have been to state before, and it was a huge crowd," he said. "We regrouped to some extent in the second half and played hard." MARIST 3, NORTH VALLEY 1 -- At Grants Pass, the Knights scored early in their second round class 3A-2A-1A girls soccer playoff match, but couldn't hold off the Spartans on a water-logged field. North Valley's lone goal was scored by Julia Arnado, while the Spartans' goals came from Kristine Greig, Kristine Rice, and Laura Kehoe. North Valley ended the season with a 14-1-0 record. Boys soccer HIDDEN VALLEY 9, COLTON 1 -- At Grants Pass, the Mustangs improve to 12-1-1 on the season with the Class 3A-2A-1A state playoff win. They advance to Saturday's quarterfinals against Marist at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. Hidden Valley built a 5-0 lead by the half and coasted to a victory, attacking Colton with a barrage of 32 shots against two. "Our defense played excellent," Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal said. He praised the defensive performance of Mike Muneyyirci, Benji Jordan, Scott Palmer, Aaron Johnson, saying they had their best match of the season. Contributing two goals each for the Mustangs were Matt Johnson, Dan Andrews, Jesse Johnson and Ben Jaramillo. Scott Palmer scored the other goal, his first of the season. Boys water polo ASHLAND 18, PARKROSE 8 -- At Ashland, the Grizzlies earned a trip to the state championship tournament with the win Monday at the Southern Oregon University pool.
