Whether the Comets stay there could be determined off the field rather than on it. The eligibility of a player who transferred into the district has come into question, said coach Ed Lindbloom. The Oregon School Activities Association is examining the case and will rule on it, but there has been no indication when a decision will come. The player appeared in the Comets' first eight games, meaning wins in that period could be forfeited. The player did not play Tuesday. Crater is 5-2-2 overall and 3-0 in the SSC. Advertisement Against Ashland, the Comets scored in the 12th minute on a long indirect kick by Sadie Barlow. Barlow took a pass from Andi Bagdan and launched a perfect shot into the upper V from about 30 yards. "We were going toward the mountain and the wind was flying down," said Lindbloom. "For us to get that goal going into the wind, we had some serious luck smiling on our side tonight." The two teams are defined by their defenses, which are led by their sweepers, Bagdan of Crater and Hannah Sohl of Ashland. "We needed a player to step up," said Lindbloom. Karina Ramirez, a teammate of both Bagdan's and Sohl's in club ball, did just that. "She stepped up her game defensively and made some great offensive runs," said Lindbloom. "She really took it upon herself to make sure we won the game. She just played phenomenally." Sophomore Katie Orr started in goal for the first time for the Comets and excelled, said Lindbloom. The loss was Ashland's first in conference, dropping it to 3-1 in the SSC and 6-4 overall. "We were very much in control in the first 10 minutes," said Grizzlies coach Eric Wolff. "When their score happened, it turned everything upside down. I thought we were much stronger in the first half, then in the second half it was very even. It was very much a defensive battle." KLAMATH UNION 4, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Klamath Falls, four girls scored for Klamath Union, which took a 3-0 halftime lead en route to the SSC win. Hannah Honzel tallied first in the 25th minute on an assist from Sara Blevins. Sarah Garcia scored in the 30th minute and Katie Gilbert in the 38th. Garcia assisted on the Pelicans' final goal by Jordan Wendt in the 50th minute. KU is 4-4-1, 1-2 SSC. Eagle Point fell to 3-6, 1-2. District 6 PHOENIX 1, ST. MARY'S 0 — Chelsea Passante scored the game's lone goal a minute before halftime, and it came shortly after a key injury for host St. Mary's. Whitney Adderson, the Crusaders' sweeper who was having an outstanding game, fell awkwardly and broke a bone in an arm. Minutes later, Passante took a cross to the outside from Carlee Storey and fired a long shot just under the crossbar. Phoenix freshman goalie Kourtney Scroggins got the shutout, and Molly Hobson and Jordan Ceremony were strong offensively. For St. Mary's, freshman Shannon Seus played well in goal. The Pirates are 6-4-1, 5-4 District 6, and St. Mary's is 4-6, 2-6. NORTH VALLEY 2, HENLEY 0 — At Merlin, junior midfielder Karli Clark scored two second-half goals for North Valley (8-3, 6-2 Dist. 6). Clark converted in the 59th minute off an assist from Taylor Vandehey and scored unassisted with five minutes remaining. Junior goalie Chelsea Giesen recorded the shutout. The Knights outshot Henley, 10-3. HIDDEN VALLEY 9, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Murphy, Melissa Henner and Ashley Seal each scored two goals to lead Hidden Valley. In the 49th minute, Emily Misner lofted a pass for Henner, who headed it over the heads of three defenders and Rogue River's goalie, who came out to protect. Her next goal came 10 minutes later on a pass from Ariana Fleischman, which deflected off a defender and rolled away from the goal. Henner collected the pass and did a 180-degree spin and booted it home. Misner had three assists for Hidden Valley (10-0, 9-0 Skyline) and Denise Powell scored and added an assist. Nonconference MAZAMA 2, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama scored twice in the first half of the nonconference contest. The Vikings' goals were by Kelli Hayden and Christina Bracamontes.
