MUSIC Hawaiian slack-key guitarist Makana plays the Unitarian “Slack-key guitar music — indigenous to Hawaii — has been around longer than the blues, and Makana is considered its greatest living player," according to Esqure Magazine. By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 12, 2014 @ 12:00 pm By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 12, 2014 @ 12:00 pm » Social News “Slack-key guitar music — indigenous to Hawaii — has been around longer than the blues, and Makana is considered its greatest living player," according to Esquire Magazine. Makana grew up on the shores of Waikiki amid such legends as Don Ho and Bruno Mars. By age 14, he was performing professionally in Honolulu as a protege of slack-key guitarists and Hawaiian music artists Bobby Moderow and the late Sonny Chillingworth. "My music is like a banyan tree," Makana says during a telephone interview. "The roots run extremely deep. I've spent much time with my elders, my 'kapuna,' the old-time masters." Makana has dedicated his life to the perpetuation and evolution of Hawaii's traditional folk art form — an expression of beautiful surroundings and way of life. The guitar style is characterized by "slacking" the strings to open chords and allow basslines, rhythms and melodies that evoke an island ambience. Think three guitars in one. From this tradition, Makana has created his high-octane style he calls "slack rock," combining rock, world, classical, bluegrass, jazz and electronic music. His new direction led him to be recognized in 2008 by Guitar Player Magazine as one of America's top three guitarists. He's also garnered praise from Metallica's guitarist Kirk Hammet and Spanish flamenco master Pepe Romero. Makana will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland. Dancers from Ashland hula school Ka Pi'o O Ke Anuenue also will perform. Tickets cost $20 in advance and can be purchased at Music Coop, 268 E. Main St., online at stclairevents.com or by calling 541-535-3562. Tickets will cost $22 at the door, $10 for ages 12 through 17. Kids 11 and younger get in free. Makana will host a Hawaiian slack-key guitar workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Unitarian Fellowship. The workshop is open to all levels of players, and the cost is $35. See www.stclairevents.com or call 541-535-3562 to register. At 36, Makana is celebrating 25 years in show business playing guitar, and his new double album is titled "25." The CD represents directions that Makana will continue to take. One of them is his traditional Hawaiian slack-key and roots music such as blues and bluegrass, along with folk songs from the '60s. "I'm big on songwriters Tim Buckley, Leon Russell, Jim Croce, James Taylor, Robert Johnson," he says. "That's part of my repertoire, and it's steeped in respect for the older generation, specifically the slack-key form." That's one side of it. The other side is an intense, sexy, passionate blend of slack-key fused with blues and rock, he says. "It's a different vibe," Makana says. "I can do a Hawaiian show, and fans would love it. Or I can play my music. In 2009 or 2010, I opened a show for Paul Rodgers of Bad Company and Free at the Emerald Queen in Tacoma. I knew the crowd would eat me alive if I walked on stage and played a Hawaiian tune. So I exploded with something dynamic and powerful. It was a totally different show, and I received a standing ovation. "Part of the album is like that," he says. "It's the closest thing to having me play live because I recorded it in a basement in monophonic sound on an analog tape recorder. I didn't even master the record. I didn't want the dynamics to be destroyed." The album will be available only on Makana's West Coast tour. Makana's music was featured on the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning 2011 film "The Descendants," starring George Clooney, and in 2012, he was awarded the Na Hoku Ki Ho'alu Legacy Award by the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts.
