Goalie sparks Grants Pass to win over Ashland GRANTS PASS Grants Pass coach Hector Cruz has learned to depend on goalie Alicia Pilcher. And the returning first-team all-conference keeper didnt disappoint her coach in girls Southern Oregon Conference soccer Tuesday at Mel Ingram Field Pilcher blocked two shots in the regulation shootout, then Ashland missed wide in sudden death. Alison Klingel seized the opportunity as the Cavers first shooter in sudden death and booted the ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net to provide Grants Pass a thrilling 1-0 victory. "My goalie tipped every ball in the shootout," Cruz said. "Shes intimidating because shes a big girl. She makes the right choices. If you dont hit it hard, shell block it." After the teams played to a scoreless regulation and two, 10-minute overtime periods, the game went into a five-player shootout. Ashland made its first shot, while Grants Pass missed. The Cavers tied it at 1 after two shooters when Pilcher got a block and Tasha Cook scored for the Cavers. Ashland converted and Grants Pass didnt on the third shot. Then Megan Moon capitalized on a Pilcher block and tied the score at two apiece. After Ashland made its fifth shot, Kati Lamont did the same to send the match into sudden death. Pilcher, a four-year starter, has never lost in six career shootouts. Grants Pass improved to 3-1 in the SOC, with all three wins coming on shootout victories. "We had more quality opportunities to score in regulation," said Cruz. "We didnt give them a good look." Jeannelle Thompson led the Cavers defensive effort. "She played an awesome game shutting down any attack they built," said Cruz. "She was winning the ball and held our defense together." Cruz credited Klingel with keeping the momentum the Cavers way with some important contributions at midfield.
