South gives KU the boot South Medford found itself trailing Southern Oregon Conference rival Klamath Union 1-0 at halftime in a non-league boys soccer match Tuesday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. "In the first half we werent working our passing game," South Medford coach Dave Potter said. "Our players came off the field displeased with themselves. I didnt say much. They knew what they had to do." The Panthers changed their approach in the second stanza and rode a pair of goals by Josh Neville to a 2-1 victory. "It wasnt a model game," said Potter. "KU brought an intensity level rarely seen in non-league games. They came over here to win. They put our backs against the wall." The Pels scored on a penalty kick by Alex Casey midway through the opening period when South goalie Kyle Hadley got called for a foul on the goal line near the edge of the penalty area. The Panthers knotted the score at 1-all on Nevilles unassisted goal at the 50th minute. Neville faked a KU defender and connected with a left-footed shot past the outstretched arms of senior goalie Dan Read. Neville tallied the game-winning goal 20 minutes later off a direct kick by Craig Tomlins. Neville worked his way behind the defensive wall and managed to get off a shot inside the goal box. "Josh showed ability to challenge players and control the ball under pressure," said Potter. South defender Adam Walport drew a difficult assignment against Klamaths Casey, who Potter described as "one of the fastest players in the state." "Adam was the one player we had on the field who could stay with Alex," said Potter. "He had a great game." Another performance of note was turned in by South junior fullback/midfielder Cody George. The first-year varsity player was credited with a smart, hustling and effective effort by Potter. "We played unattractive soccer in the first half," said Potter. "In the second half, we increased our will to pass the ball accurately. We played the ball with better possession skills." NORTH MEDFORD 1, CHURCHILL 1 At Eugene, North Medford (1-1-1) dominated the match as evidenced by a 21-8 difference in shots on goal. The teams played to a scoreless first half. North Medford took a 1-0 lead at the 62nd minute when outside fullback Justin Bilodeau scored from 12 yards off an assist from Eric Brawner. Churchills T.J. Tyshoni tied the game on a breakaway about 10 minutes later. CROOK COUNTY 3, EAGLE POINT 2 At Prineville, senior forward Nathan Scudder scored a pair of goals for winless Eagle Point (0-4-1). Scudder gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game, but Crook County tied it four minutes later on a score by Ed Tombleson. Eric Budke scored the first of two goals for Crook County at the 30-minute mark and the Cowboys went into halftime with a 2-1 lead. Scudder pulled the Eagles even 15 minutes into the second half, but Budke, a junior midfielder, tallied the game- winner with 10 minutes remaining. ROGUE RIVER 3, NORTH VALLEY 3 At Merlin, North Valley (0-0-3) jumped to a 3-0 lead but never scored again as Rogue River rallied back to end the non-conference contest in a tie. Jon Handley scored unassisted for North Valleys first score. Jason Shaw scored North Valleys next two goals, one on a corner kick and the other on an unassisted 18-yard blast. Rogue River scored two goals to make it 3-2 at halftime, and scored one goal in the second half. HENLEY 5, MAZAMA 1 At Klamath Falls, Gabriel Hernandez had two goals and Joe Salvati added one goal and an assist as Henley pulled away after a 1-1 halftime tie.
