Oregon State Police are investigating the incident involving 37-year-old security guard Venise Hollinshead, who is employed by Portland-based Tac-One Security, OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said. State police dispatchers received a report of a shot fired near the soccer field on the Grants Pass campus at about 10:14 p.m.. That shot, according to Hollinshead's recount to police, was fired in the midst of her struggle against the attacker, an OSP news release said. Hollinshead initially tried to pepper spray the man, who was described as 6-feet tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark clothing, the release said. Approaching from behind, the man hit her in the back of the head before attempting to take her gun, the release said. He ran into a nearby wooded area after the struggle, the release said. "All we know is that she was on a routine patrol and she was attacked," Hastings said. "We believe that she handled the situation very well." Police received a report of the assault at about 10:21 p.m. Hollinshead was transported to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass with minor cuts and scrapes, the release said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at 541-776-6111. "We're very, very thankful that nobody was seriously injured," said RCC spokesman Grant Walker. "Preliminary reports show the guard acted appropriately and in self defense." Walker said it's a good idea for anyone walking alone on the campus after dark to walk with a friend or call security for an escort. Campus security can be reached 24 hours a day at 541-218-2930, he said. "The safety of our students and staff is a really high priority," Walker said. Tac-One is contracted by RCC to provide armed and unarmed security services for the college's campuses located in Medford, White City and Grants Pass, according to Tac-One's website.
