Jennifer Beck, Crater Lake National Park botanist, will lead a moderate, off-trail hike on rolling terrain through forest stands and meadows to see a variety of plants, including Mt. Mazama, leather grape-fern and mountain owl clover. Bring lunch, water, hat and sunscreen. Meet at 10 a.m. at the junction of Deer Creek Road (NF 6260) and Highway 62 (just east of the junction of Highways 62 and 230). The dirt-road drive to the hiking spot is 30-45 minutes. Fly casting at Hedrick Middle School Mondays: Otis Swisher and John MacDiarmid of the Rogue Fly Fishers will teach people how to cast with a fly rod Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. at Hedrick Middle School, 1501 E. Jackson St., Medford. Both beginners and seasoned casters who want to practice are welcome. Free. No casting on rain days or holidays. Lithia Park nature walks Through September: Each Sunday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m., trained naturalists from Ashland Parks and Recreation will lead an easy 90-minute nature walk through Lithia Park, rain or shine. The free walks touch on trees, flowers, birds, climate, water, geology and history of the park. Meet at the park entrance across from the Plaza in Ashland. No reservations required. Rogue Valley Walkers Saturday, Aug. 6: 10K walk will explore Central Point. A 5K option is available. Meet at 7:45 a.m. in the Albertsons parking lot near I-5 exit 33. Rogue Gorge Hike Sunday, Aug. 7: Led by KS Wild, this moderately easy hike will explore the dramatic Rogue Gorge, where the Rogue River passes through a narrow basalt passage. The group will hike downstream to see the spectacular forests along the river.
