Junior Vaa, 23, was arraigned Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court on first- and second-degree assault charges for allegedly stabbing a 24-year-old acquaintance at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. Vaa was arrested at an apartment in the 100 block of North Columbus Avenue shortly after the incident, Medford police Sgt. Jerry Burchfiel reported in a news release. The victim was stabbed once in the chest following an argument with Vaa, police said. The victim was taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, where he was treated and released Thursday, according to a hospital nursing supervisor. Vaa was being held late Thursday in the Jackson County Jail on $500,000 bail. First-degree assault carries a mandatory minimum prison term of 7½ years upon conviction, according to state sentencing guidelines.
