Maybe the participating students could teach their parents some track etiquette. Mary Lewis Medford Laws without studies My properly immunized daughter caught whooping cough from a properly immunized person, me. I could still be a carrier, regardless of vaccines. It doesn't take an anti-vaxxer to realize that vaccines are much less effective than claimed. It takes a media-medical culture to make laws based on scientific studies that were never done. Ira Edwards Medford Police brutality I take exception to Mr. Eagleson's statement in the April 28 newspaper. Police kill people who refuse to obey the law and endanger other citizens. Medford has a outstanding police force, as we have with the Sheriff's Office. This is not Los Angeles, Chicago or New York, although we are headed that way thanks to the drugs, broken homes and some politicians. Unfortunately, our society has those who believe it is their calling to find fault and stir up trouble. These people who cause trouble and rebel against law and order usually have personal problems they will not deal with. Jess Gladson Medford League says thanks Junior League of Jackson County would like to thank everyone who joined us for our First Annual Spring Tea on April 18. We had a lovely tea and raised $4,000 for Rogue Powerpacks! This money will provide more than 12 kids with weekend food packages for the entire school year. These children are selected for the Rogue Powerpacks Program by their teachers because they are not getting enough food on weekends and holidays when free school meals are unavailable. They are so excited to pick up their backpack full of food each Friday after school. For more information on the Rogue Powerpack Program, email [email protected]. We are grateful to the hostesses, guests and local businesses that joined together to support the children of the Rogue Valley. Jolee Mougey Medford Another POW story e As foreman in a plywood mill providing shipping containers for military cargo overseas, my father was exempt from service in World War II. A crew of POWs detained at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, South Carolina, worked under him. The mill workers didn't think the lunches provided by the base were adequate, considering the hard work they were doing. They decided to set up an account at the company store where they could buy extra food. The mill owner let them take any scraps of plywood not useable for making containers for their own purposes. Some of them were very gifted woodworkers. When the war ended, most of them did not want to return overseas, but had no choice. They were not allowed to take anything but their clothing with them. My mother became the recipient of several beautiful jewelry boxes, a trunk, and various other pieces that are still in the family. Years later some of the men and their families, sponsored by the places they had worked, returned to our area. They all became proud citizens of the United States.
