Senior running back/linebacker Keith Butts and senior kicker James Kulig represented the Crusaders, while senior linebacker Tyler Boice and senior punter Michael Clark made the first team for the Challengers. Lost River, the SCL champions, swept the top three honors with quarterback Dan Chin earning offensive player-of-the-year accolades, lineman Terry Holt taking home the same honors defensively, and Dennis Dunlea receiving the coach of the year award. Boice quarterbacked both sides of the ball for the Challengers, but his biggest impact was on the defensive side. "He was our leader," said Cascade Christian coach Andy Maurer, who chose Boice as the team’s most valuable player. "You hit hard, you play hard and the other teams will notice you. He was the guy we depended on the most." Clark’s performance as the team’s punter helped push other teams into a hole, or dig his team out of one. Advertisement "When you play a field position game, your punter is very, very important," said Maurer. "He’s the best punter that we’ve had in the league for two years. "Anytime you can consistently punt it 40-45 yards with good hangtime, that can change the game." Butts, a repeat first-teamer, led St. Mary’s in rushing for the second straight season with 577 yards and five touchdowns on 126 carries. Kulig connected on 5 of 10 field goals, with three of his misses from 50 yards or more. He turned in his best performance during the Crusaders’ opening game of the season. The placekicker blasted three field goals, covering 20, 43 and 44 yards, and rushed for 137 yards on 16 carries.
