Mail Tribune / Jim Craven A library of their own CrossRoads inches toward its own library By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune Local business leaders have nudged students at an alternative Medford high school a step closer toward building their own library. Students of CrossRoads School met Monday at Waldenbooks with members of the Chamber of Medford/Jackson County leadership class. The trip helped fill CrossRoads’ growing library of mostly used — many outdated — tomes with some new volumes. Titles ranged from Mario Puzo’s "The Godfather" to "Angry Houswives Eating Bon Bons" by Lorna Landvrik. A current "Atlas of the Universe" will replace the Cold War-era editions on CrossRoads shelves. Budding chef Rudger Jenkins even added a cookbook to the collection. "I’m, like, in a buffet," the 17-year-old said as he struggled to select just one book, "Hershey’s Best-loved Recipes." The chamber took up the cause of building CrossRoads’ library for this year’s leadership project, said member Kara Jacobs. The chamber will host two more "mentoring days" with students this week. The group also will install shelving — salvaged from Medford’s old Carnegie Library building — to house the growing collection later this spring Advertisement The library project kicked off last year when students at St. Mary’s School donated about 800 books to CrossRoads, an alternative school operated by the Medford nonprofit agency, Community Works. Before the flood of goodwill, the school had gone for more than 20 years without its own library. Partnering with the chamber will increase CrossRoads’ collection to more than 1,000 books, including about 100 self-help titles aimed toward teens, said Principal Mark Wolfe. "Chicken Soup for the Soul," intrigued Jenni Guijarro, who chose a Spanish-language version for the school’s library Monday. Relying on its status as a New York Times best-seller, fellow bilingual student Alberto Diaz picked out "Cr�nica de una meurte anunciada" ("Chronicle of a Death Foretold.")
