The league co-favorite Black Tornado dominated the action against Klamath Union but couldn’t convert until the 69th minute when senior forward Luis Cabrera worked his way free inside the box and scored from about 12 yards away. North went on to score two more goals in a six-minute span and posted a 3-0 victory. "I was impressed with the way we hung in there," North Medford coach Rich Garcia said. "We were frustrated in the first half. I just told the kids to keep doing what we were doing." Senior captain Max Brown got the ball to Cabrera in good position for the initial goal. "Luis is a very good one-on-one player," said Garcia. "They were marking him tight but he got away from the defender and scored in the upper right part of the goal." Advertisement James Kidwell gave the Black Tornado some necessary breathing room four minutes later. Kidwell took the ball down the left side, kept his dribble until he neared the corner of the net and popped in a shot. "It was an acrobatic shot," said Garcia. "It was a good piece of attacking the goal." In the 75th minute, Jason Hanlin capitalized on a rebound off a Scott Reid attempt. After the shot ricocheted off several players, Hanlin hit a shot in stride from about 15 yards into the net. "Once we got the first goal, our guys were hungry for another one," said Garcia. "They wanted to make sure nothing happened. We didn’t want any flukes." North Medford outshot the Pelicans, 16-6. Senior goalie Oscar Benitez recorded the shutout. Garcia credited senior sweeper Devin Torrey and midfielder Brown with helping North control most of the action. "(Torrey) was the guy taking care of the back and making it easier for Oscar (Benitez)," said Garcia. "(Brown) had a couple of good shots and played with a lot of energy." ASHLAND 4, ROSEBURG 1 — At Roseburg, forward Thomas Golding, who missed all of last year as an exchange student overseas, scored a hat trick to boost Ashland in the Southern Oregon Conference opener. He then scored twice in the second half. A goal by Ashland’s Corey Costantino at the 13th minute evened the score at 1-1. Roseburg’s Juan Carlos Rodriguez put the Indians on the board in the fourth minute on an assist from Quentin Clark. GRANTS PASS 2, CRATER 1 — At Grants Pass, Adam Ortiz’s goal in the 76th minute lifted Grants Pass in the Southern Oregon Conference opener for both teams. MARY’S 3, HENLEY 0 — Strong defensive support allowed Class 2A/1A defending state-champion St. Mary’s to apply constant offensive pressure and outshoot Henley, 21- 6, in the opening-game victory. Senior Duncan MacDiarmid led the Crusaders with an assist and a goal. MacDiarmid beat several defenders to score unassisted in the ninth minute with a low shot to the corner. The Crusaders were unable to find the net again until the 68th minute, when junior Austin Grant scored off a throw-in assist by Dash Hillgartner.
