Mustangs ride Conklin to victory GRANTS PASS � Tony Conklin pitched 11 innings to lead the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team to a 6-3 extra-inning win over the Grants Pass Nuggets Tuesday in the nightcap of an Area 4 doubleheader. Grants Pass took the opener, 8-7. Conklin gave up two runs in the first but settled down and allowed only one baserunner, whom he picked off, in the final five innings. Andy Bartels reached on an error in the top of the 11th to start things off for the Mustangs and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Dan Bruce followed with a single, putting runners on second and third, and Evan McArthur came up with a base-hit to score the go-ahead run. Medford scored two more insurance runs on a squeeze bunt by Ken Halpin and an RBI double by Phil Ouellette. Ouellette had three hits while Skundrick, Bartels, Bruce, Halpin and McArthur each added two. Medford improved to 31-18 overall and 10-8 in league play. SOUTH MEDFORD 9-7, ASHLAND 10-3 � Blane Newfield went 4-for-4 and hit for the cycle to lead Ashland past the South Medford Colts in the opening game of a doubleheader at South Medford High. Newfield blasted a two-run shot in the second as Ashland jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The lead was extended to 10-1 before the Colts came back with five in the sixth and three more in the seventh. South Medford had the tying run on second with two outs but Kyle Hadley smoked a grounder up the middle that was snagged by the Ashland shortstop and relayed for an out in a close play at first. Matt Smith had three hits and three RBIs for South Medford (13-12) and David Henneman added two hits. In the nightcap, Smith and Henneman once again led the Colts offensive attack with two hits apiece. Clint Rodreick picked up the pitching win with three strikeouts while scattering eight hits over seven innings. Little League Baseball MEDFORD ADVANCES TO FINALE � At Lapine, the Medford American Little Leage 11-12-year-old baseball team downed South Suburban, 7-1, to advance to the championship game of the District 6 All-Star tournament on Friday. Tyler Heil picked up the win, striking out 13 and scattering three hits in the complete game performance. Tommy George got things going for Medford with a three-run homer, his second of the tournament, in the first inning. George, Jared Adamson and Heil led Medford with two hits apiece. Medford, 4-0 in tournament play, takes on the winner of the Lakeview/Ashland game in the finale. PHOENIX-TALENT TAKE TITLE � the Phoenix-Talent 9-10-year-old team won the boys District 6 Little League championship Sunday with an 8-4 victory over South Suburban of Klamath Falls. Nick Workman was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, including an RBI single in a three-run fifth inning, to help Phoenix-Talent, which advances to the state tournament July 22-27 in Gresham. Chris Thierry also had an RBI single in the fifth, and Jay McEvoy, who doubled, and Andrew George each had two hits. Jake Murphy added two RBIs, shortstop Neil Emerson played strong defense and Ryan Robinson earned the pitching win. Softball ASHLAND TAKES THIRD � At Salem, the Ashland Bandits 16-under ASA Girls Fastpitch softball team finished third in the 16 B state tournament and will move on to the regionals in Portland on Friday. The Bandits dropped their first game, 7-0 to Yoncalla, and had to play seven games on Saturday and Sunday before finally running out of gas and losing to Grants Pass, 9-3. Darci Byrne, Jamie Williams and Megan Beugli pitched Ashland through the tournament while Angela Heine caught seven straight games before being removed halfway through the eighth and final game. Heine and Williams had seven hits apiece during the tournament. BLACK TORNADO FINISH FIFTH � The Black Tornado went 3-2 and placed fifth last weekend at the 16-under A ASA fastpitch state softball tournament. The Tornado, 31-14 for the season, qualified for the regional tournament in Billings, Mont., but will not attend because of cost. At state, Tornado pitcher Keri Sevano went 2-2. Britney Hillyer led the hitters, going 5-for-10. Katie Glasscock and Haley Varley were each 6-for-15, and Beth Rathburn cracked a three-run home run. Basketball The Southern Oregon Select, a group of all-star girls basketball players from Southern Oregon, began play on a down note Tuesday in the national Battle of the Bay tournament in San Francisco. During the day, the area all-stars lost two seeding games, one to the Sacramento Capitols and the other to the Utah Trappers. In the first game, Heather Fossen from South Medford scored 19 points. Sam Gilbert of Klamath Union contributed 11 points in the second game. Tasha Williams from North Medford also performed well for the all-stars in the team�s second national tournament in two weeks.
