Local events to honor those who served in our nation's military begin Tuesday, although the main events are set for Veterans Day on Thursday. 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., RCC/SOU Higher Education Center lobby, 101 S. Bartlett St., Medford. 3 to 5 p.m., Room 184, RCC Table Rock Campus, 7800 Pacific Ave., White City. 7 a.m. to noon, pancake breakfast, American Legion Post 14 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 353, Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, Ashland. 9 to 10 a.m., memorial to honor veterans at the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial, Don Jones Park, Hamrick Road, Central Point. Patriotic music, flag-raising by the Boy Scouts of America Troop 109, speeches by U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., and Vietnam veteran Ernie Gibson. 10 a.m., theater in Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics, 8495 Crater Lake Highway, White City, speech by Jim Klug of Ashland, Oregon commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Other highlights include a memorial tribute to Oregonians who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq and a patriotic performance by the Rogue Valley Symphonic Band. 11 a.m., Veterans Day parade in Medford, Hawthorne Park down Main Street to Oakdale Avenue. Police Chief Vern Thompson will speak, and the Eagle Point High School Band will perform. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., reception in Rogue River Room, Stevenson Union, Southern Oregon University, Ashland. Congressman Walden will give address at noon. 2 p.m., ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park, corner of South Pacific Highway and Stewart Avenue, Medford, sponsored by Non-Commissioned Officers Association, Rogue Valley Chapter 1260. Featuring Marine Corps Lt. Col. Mark Boone and 1st Lt. David Gauthier. 6:30 p.m., musical tribute "Salute to America's Finest," Crater High Performing Arts Center, 655 N.Third St., Central Point. 7 p.m., Southern Oregon Concert Band, Medford Armory, 1701 S. Pacific Highway, Medford.
